چکیده

The discovery of what we have ever since called the “Josephson effect” took place while I was visiting Cambridge, England, for a sabbatical year in 196162. R e c e n t l y , w h e n I t r a v e l l e d t o Kyoto to accept the London Prize on Brian Josephson’s behalf, I put together s o m e r e m i n i s c e n c e s o f t h a t period, which may be more interesting than a mere recapitulation of the bare scientific facts. Lest I appear too central to this account, I should make it clear that at least two other people could have told a similar story from their own points of view. They are Brian Pippard, Josephson’s thesis advisor while the work was being done, and David Shoenberg, director at that time of the Mond Laboratory in which Josephson was a research student in experimental physics and where I served as nominal head of the solid-state theory group.

Dc Transformer and Dc Josephson(-like) Effects in Quantum Hall Bilayers

In the early days of superconductivity, Ivar Giaver discovered that it was possible to make a novel DC transformer by using one superconductor to drag vortices through another. An analogous effect was predicted to exist in quantum Hall bilayers and has recently been discovered experimentally by Eisenstein’s group at Caltech. Similarly, new experiments from the Caltech group have demonstrated th...

Rebuttal To: Has Dark Energy Really Been Discovered in the Lab?

We argue that a recent discussion of Jetzer and Straumann [Phys. Lett. B 606, 77 (2005)] relating the measured noise spectrum in Josephson junctions to van der Waals forces is incorrect. The measured noise spectrum in Josephson junctions is a consequence of the fluctuation dissipation theorem and the Josephson effect and has nothing to do with van der Waals forces. Consequently, the argument of...

Josephson Current For a Graphene Nanoribbon Using a Lattice Model

A tight binding approach based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach has been used to calculate the DC Josephson current for a lattice model for S-GNR-S junctions , for short junctions with respect to superconducting coherence length. We calculate the phase, length, width and chemical potential dependence at the Josephson junction and discuss the similarities and differences with regard to the t...

Paramagnetic and diamagnetic States in two-dimensional josephson-junction arrays.

Many experiments on high-temperature superconductors have shown paramagnetic behavior when the sample is field cooled. The paramagnetism was attributed to a d-wave order parameter creating pi-junctions in the samples. However, the same effect was later discovered in traditional low-temperature superconductors and conventional Josephson-junction arrays which are s wave. By simulating both conven...

Superfluidity and Superconductivity in Double-Layered Quantum Hall state

We discuss and review the basic physics that leads to superfluidity/superconductivity in certain quantum Hall states, in particular the so-called double-layered (mmm) state. In the K-matrix description of the quantum correlation in quantum Hall states, those states with det(K) = 0 contain a special correlation that leads to superfluidity/superconductivity. We propose a four-terminal measurement...
